Kobe Bryant scored 33 points and the Los Angeles Lakers welcomed Andrew Bynum back from injury with a 116-102 National Basketball Association victory over Western Conference rivals Denver on Thursday.
The victory was the 63rd this season for the Lakers, matching the Cleveland Cavaliers for most wins in the league. Bynum played 21 minutes in his first game since tearing a right knee ligament on January 31 and scored 16 points with seven rebounds. Bynum, who played with a brace on his knee, got a big cheer from the Staples Center crowd when his name was announced in the pre-game introductions. He started in place of Lamar Odom, and clearly wasn’t afraid of contact. He did take a while to find his rhythm, going 0-for-2 in the first quarter and losing the ball twice.

In the third quarter he scored nine points and finished 7-of-11 from the field. Pau Gasol added 27 points and 19 rebounds for the Lakers, while Carmelo Anthony had 23 points to lead the Nuggets. Denver are lying second in the Western Conference behind the Lakers, but have not yet clinched the second seed in the playoffs. Newcastle Eagles won their third BBL Championship title in four years after defeating old rivals the Scottish Rocks 87-70 at the MetroRadio Arena. The Eagles stormed to the title with a 13-game winning streak. The Rocks, meanwhile, have suffered a late collapse after losing their last nine games and are at risk of dropping out of the playoffs.
